Douglas County Libraries Assist Veterans with Benefits
In coordination with the American Association of Libraries (ALA), Douglas County Libraries is reaching out to local veterans and their families to help them understand new educational benefits available under the post-9/11 GI Bill which takes effect August 1, 2009.
The ALA in conjunction with the American Legion, the National Military Family Association, the American Council on Education and the National Association of Federally Impacted Schools, has created a Helpful Webpage to help Vets locate current information; the information located here by no means is the only applicable information available.
eMedia2Go offers Apple compatible MP3 format
Douglas County Libraries now offers the new Apple compatible MP3 format in its eMedia2Go.org collection.
Download audiobooks to your Ipod as well as hundreds of other compatible players. You'll find popular fiction and nonfiction authors for children, young adults and adults in a variety of popular genres. This new format offering is in its infancy and all audiobook publishers are not currently offering DRM-free (Digital Rights Management) downloadable audiobooks. Watch our collection grow. You can download audio and video at eMedia2Go.org. Please have your library card handy.
Donate Coats at Your Local Library
During the month of November, Douglas County Libraries is uniting with Coats for Colorado to gather gently used and new coats for those who need them this winter.
Last year, Douglas County Libraries collected more than 1,500 coats for individuals and families.

Bookmobile Holds Pick-up
The Bookmobile is in the shop for repairs until 10/11/08!
You can pick up your holds, Monday through Thursday at the following locations:
- Monday: Philip S. Miller Library, in the History Research area until 8 pm.
- Tuesday: King Soopers store in Castle Pines North from 12 noon until 6:30pm.
- Wednesday: Windsor at the Meridian clubhouse lobby from 12 - 6pm.
- Thursday: Cherrywood Village clubhouse lobby from 12- 6pm.

Flu Shots at Douglas County Libraries
Front Range Flu Shots will provide flu and pneumococcal immunizations for patrons at our branches in Parker, Lone Tree, Castle Rock, and Highlands Ranch.

Food for Fines
Food bank pantries around Douglas County are empty. In an effort to help restock the shelves, all Douglas County Libraries including the bookmobile will waive library fines in exchange for non-perishable food items from Monday, September 22 until Monday, October 20. This offer does not include charges related to lost or damaged items.
Food banks are especially in need of canned meats, pasta, rice, and boxed dinners. The libraries will collect the food and then deliver it to the food bank in their area. You may drop off the food at the Bookmobile or any of the following branches of Douglas County Libraries:
Scratchboard Art for Teens
Images emerge from scratchboard by taking color away rather than adding it.
Learn the reverse art process of scratchboard with local artist Jennifer Bissland.

Free Citizenship Classes
Find out how you can become a United States citizen during a four-week series of free classes for ages 18 and up, beginning Saturday, September 13, from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. at the Highlands Ranch Library (9292 Ridgeline Boulevard).
Instructor Maggie Pike, will guide you through the citizenship process and answer questions you may have about obtaining your U.S. Citizenship.
Registration is required and includes attendance at all four Saturday classes. Register online, call 303-791-READ, or visit your library.
Literacy Volunteer Orientation and Training

For adults in our community who would like to reach out by supporting the adult literacy programs as a volunteer. Volunteers help students learn English, prepare for the GED or citizenship test, or read.
Training will include:
- Volunteer support
- Adult learning theory
- Tutor training

BRING: A valid government issued picture ID, cash or money order to cover fees, and proof of Colorado residency (ID OK)
FEES: $90 for the full battery of GED tests. $20 per section for test retakes. The Official Pre-Test is free.
