The Record-Journal of Douglas County’s publications from 1923 to 1941 have been added to the Colorado Historic Newspapers Collection. Historic Douglas County newspapers now available at www.coloradohistoricnewspapers.org include the Castle Rock Journal (1881 - 1908), the Record-Journal of Douglas County (1908 - 1941), West Creek Mining News, and the Nighthawk Mountain Echo (1897 - 1900).
The collection’s expansion spans 18 years of newspaper publishing, and was made possible through the cooperative effort of the Colorado State Library, Colorado Community Newspapers and the Douglas County History Research Center at Douglas County Libraries.
The addition will benefit innumerable users, including library patrons, local news reporters, and distance researchers interested in Douglas County and Colorado history. Users may access the collection without having to visit a specific location, check out material, or even be residents of Douglas County.
CCN holds the newest additions’ copyright, and granted the Colorado State Library permission to digitize the newspapers in an agreement among James Duncan of the Colorado State Library, Asa Cole, retired publisher of CCN, and Rochelle Logan, associate director of Douglas County Libraries.
This cooperative effort illustrates the tangible value of state and local partnerships and measurably saves taxpayer dollars. In the absence of the Colorado Historic Newspaper Collection program, those interested in Colorado history from 1860 to 1923 would have only two cumbersome options for accessing historic newspapers: rolling through miles of microfilm, or paging through old, fragile newsprint, if available.
